Vintage Virginia - Salted Background on Scrapbook Page

OK I just had to do this, I received my new Tim Holtz Stickles and had a beautiful photo of my Grandmother, just begging to be used... this is the result.

Products:

• Cardstock: Tablex, Bazzil
• Rub-ons: Basic Grey, Chatterbox
• Stamps: Stampers Anonymous Tim Holtz #V4-1096, PSX Affirmations #K-3237
• Ink: Ranger Distress Inkpad, Versamark
• Other: Judikins Amazing Glaze, photo on matte card, chipboard swirl, Distress reinkers, Distress embossing powder, Distress stickles, scissors, Opals embossing powder , Krylon gold leafing pen, pearl buttons, adhesive pearls, spritzer bottle with water, heat gun, brown cotton thread, Glossy Accents, paper trimmer, damp paper towel/baby wipe, rock salt, shallow plastic tray and acid free double sided tape.

Technique:

1. Stamp white Tablex card (160mm x 160mm) with Stampers Anonymous Carte Postale stamp and emboss with Amazing Glaze clear embossing powder.
2. Stamp white Tablex strip (160mm x 70mm) with PSX Affirmations stamp and emboss with Walnut Stain Distress embossing powder. When cool, rub over the embossed areas with your finger to remove the distress crystals – these will feel a little like sand.
3. Lay both pieces of card embossed side facing up, onto a flat plastic tray and spritz heavily with water.
4. Apply 3-5 drops of each Distress Reinker to square card: Frayed Burlap, Antique Linen, Milled Lavender and Dusty Concord, spritzing between colours.
5. Apply 2 drops of each Distress Reinker to the rectangle of card: Frayed Burlap, Antique Linen and Milled Lavender, to create a matching pale pastel strip, spritz between colours.
6. Sprinkle rock salt over the square card and leave to dry overnight. When dry, rub off any large salt crystals and wipe embossed areas with damp paper towel to remove excess colour, then carefully trim off any salt crystals that have formed on the edges of the square card.
7. Edge square with Frayed Burlap Distress ink pad and adhere to Bazzil Quicksand backing card (160mm x 160mm) to create a base page.
8. Tear pastel strip lengthways to create two strips, roughly 160mm x 30mm each. Edge strips using Frayed burlap Distress ink and then use Milled lavender Distress ink to highlight torn edge.
9. Mount pastel strips onto Bazzil Quicksand card 160mm x 35mm with edges torn to match pastel strips and apply Milled Lavender Distress Stickles along torn edge and Frayed burlap ink to straight edges.
10. Adhere one strip 5mm from top and the other 5mm from the bottom of base page - torn edges towards the centre.
11. Trim tinted photo to measure 52mm x 78mm and edge with Frayed Burlap Distress ink. Glue photo to left side of Bazzil Quicksand card (70mm x 85mm). Edge card with Frayed burlap ink and apply Chatterbox Brown ‘Chippy’ rub-on letters along right hand side to spell Virginia. Apply Basic Grey ‘Wholy Cow’ white rub-on corner flourish to top left of photo panel.
12. Sew 4 pearl buttons along lower right side of photo and randomly decorate between buttons with Kaiser Self Adhesive Pearls.
13. Adhere photo panel to the right side of the base page, as per example photo.
14. Ink top of Maya Road chipboard flourish using Versamark ink and coat with 3 layers of Abalone Opals, heating between each layer. While still warm, sprinkle Sandstone Opals onto top half of flourish and Lavender Opals onto bottom half, heat to set. When cool, edge flourish using Krylon gold leafing pen.
15. Glue flourish to left side of base page, in line with photo panel, using Glossy Accents.
16. Decorate the centre of the flourish with a line of self adhesive pearls and leave entire page to dry for at least 60 minutes on a flat surface.

TIPS:

• Distress Reinkers produce gorgeous vintage looks for Scrapbook pages, wonderful for all those difficult to match hand tinted family photos.
• You can use the water from the spritzer to move the Distress ink around on the page by spraying in the direction you want the colour to move, this can create a more pleasing effect. 

Funky Cherish - Salted Background on Gloss Card, it CAN be done!

   OK - this card is a bit out there I admit - I used the Salted background technique on Gloss card and didn't emboss at all - this one took a little while to perfect, but it does give very interesting results Give it a try yourself...

Products:

• Cardstock: Bazill, gloss card, A5 purple satin base card folded
• Stickers: Making Memories
• Rub-ons: Basic Grey, Making Memories
• Ink: Ranger Distress
• Other: Pentel / Marvy Metallic Markers, purple ribbon, spritzer bottle with water, rock salt, Krylon Spray Gloss Varnish, paper piercer/needle, paper trimmer, shallow plastic tray and acid free double sided tape.

Technique:

1. Lay white gloss card 150mm x 100mm, glossy side facing up, onto flat plastic tray and spritz heavily with water. Dab metallic markers (silver, purple & red), one colour at a time, onto wet card, spritz between each colour to encourage colour mixing.
2. Sprinkle card with rock salt, spritz again with water and leave to dry overnight on flat surface (you can leave it in the tray if you like).
3. Brush off large salt crystals and then gently spray with Krylon Gloss varnish to seal, dry for at least 10 minutes. This creates an effect that looks something like marble. The glossy card must be sealed before use, or the very fine salt crystals left on the card by this technique will prevent ink, stickers and rub-ons from sticking.
4. Trim sealed piece to 143mm x 62mm, and apply Dusty Concord Distress Ink to raw white edges. Adhere Basic Grey Wholy Cow flourish rubon onto bottom long edge of panel and wrap left side of panel with 3 different purple Bazzil Monochromatic ribbons, finally adhere Making Memories Wedding Velvet word sticker ‘Cherish’ to top right side of panel.
5. Trim Bazzil Pansy card to 143mm x 75mm and using a paper piercer, make holes along lower right long edge every 5mm, finishing just short of the middle. Adhere salted panel to the Bazzil Pansy card – positioning panel closer to the top of the card so that piercing is easily visible.
6. Cut Bazzil Jubilee to 143mm x 100mm and using paper piercer, make holes along top and bottom long edges every 5mm. Adhere Pansy panel to the Jubilee card – positioning panel closer to the top of the card, leaving 20mm of open space at the bottom.
7. Adhere Making Memories Rub-on ‘Card Sayings’ Happy Mother’s Day to lower right of Jubilee card, just above the line of piercings.
8. Attach the entire assemblage to the front of the folded purple shimmer base card.

TIPS:

• Glossy card is not suitable to emboss with this technique, as most products which will successfully coat the gloss card will also cover any embossing.

Share - Another Salted Background Project

This card differs slightly from the first, by using several complimentary colours for the backgrounds and by using Twinkling H20's instead of Starburst Stains.

PRODUCTS:

• Cardstock: Tablex, black card, A5 folded purple base card
  
• Paper: Lilac 80gsm paper
  
• Stamps: Stampers Anonymous #x105, Fred Mullett Marshwood lavender FBM-375 and Fred Mullett lavender FBM-126
  
• Ink: Brilliance
  
• Other: Judikins Amazing Glaze, Twinkling H20s, Distress Stickles, mini brads, jelly word, black ribbon, mop type paint brush, spritzer bottle with water, paper trimmer, rock salt, damp paper towel/baby wipe, heat gun, shallow plastic tray and acid free double sided tape  

Technique:

1. Add 10 drops of water to each pot of H20s (Sweet Lavender, Evening Primrose, Snap Dragon, Periwinkle and Icy Iris) and set aside.
2. Cut white card into 3 panels, each measuring 40mm x 80mm.
3. Stamp white panels with Fred Mullet Lavender and leaf stamps and emboss with Amazing Glaze clear embossing powder. Lay panels embossed side facing up, onto flat plastic tray and spritz heavily with water.
4. Apply H20s one colour at a time (clean brush between colours to prevent contamination) using paint brush and a pouncing motion: a. Sweet Lavender, Evening Primrose and Snap Dragon to 2 panels, and b. Sweet Lavender, Periwinkle, Snap Dragon and Icy Iris to the remaining panel.
5. Sprinkle rock salt generously over wet card and leave overnight to air dry on a flat surface.
6. Brush off large salt crystals and wipe embossed images with damp paper towel to remove surplus colour.
7. Mount each coloured panel onto black scrap card 42mm x 82mm.
8. Trim lilac paper to 140mm x 110mm. Tear one long edge so final measurement is close to 140mm x 95mm, then stamp with Stampers Anonymous script using Moonlight White Brilliance ink, edge paper using same ink.
9. Trace torn edge with Antique Linen Distress Stickles and let dry.
10. Glue all coloured panels onto lilac card (lightest panel in the middle), place closer to the top than to the bottom and make sure to space evenly, 3mm from each edge and 4mm between each panel.
11. Attach Jelly word ‘Share’ to black ribbon using lavender mini brads and wrap ribbon across bottom of panels, attaching at the back.
12. Adhere assembled layer to the front of purple folded card.

TIPS: 

• Don’t try to speed up drying with a heat gun as you will not get the same results.

Salted Backgrounds

You may not have noticed (as it only appeared in the online edition), but I was recently published in For Keeps Creative Paper - Issue 77, 2009 - direct link here! The article outlines the BASIC steps for the Salted Backgrounds projects I was talking about on the Yahoo list StampHappy. Well I thought I'd share a few more project ideas with you so you can have a go at this very cool technique for yourselves. • Stickers: Making Memories

• Ink: Versamark
• Other: Judikins Amazing Glaze, rock salt, Starburst Stains, lavender ribbon, black 3/16 eyelets, heat gun, spritzer bottle with water, damp paper towel/baby wipe, paper trimmer, shallow plastic tray and acid free double sided tape.

Salted Cards

OK - salted card fronts are fabulous fun, you can't plan as they always turn out differently - so there is no pressure!

You can use almost any water-based thin paint or dye, some of my favourite things to use are: - Twinkling H20s - Starburst Stains - Glimmer Mist - DynaFlow - Watercolours - Dye reinkers - Distress Inks - Perfect Pearls in Distress Ink Solution But you can give anything a go that will run when wet!

Materials

• Nopa brand white card (available from Office works), have tried other brands with varied success - so give anything a go. Cut to card front size.
• You'll want to do this in a shallow tray as there is a lot of water involved and overnight drying time, baking paper optional.
• Several strong colours of H20s - 3 at most (you could also use Starburst Stains or Glimmer Mist in dark colours)
• Water spritzer
• Rock salt
• Stamp and versamark pad
• Clear embossing powder
• bold stamp - no detail
• thick brush

Instructions

1. Stamp and emboss a bold image onto your white card, using a Versamark pad with clear EP.
2. Once embossing has cooled, place card embossed side up - in a shallow tray,(you may like to line with baking paper) spritz with water heavily.
3. Using a wet brush, swirl around in your pot of H20s and apply colours randomly over embossed surface of card - you can cover all white space or leave some blank - depending on the look you're after.
4. Apply more water - you literally want your card to be dripping wet (hence the need for a shallow tray), and you want the colours to run and mix.
5. Sprinkle rock salt over your wet card front, add a 'little' more water - this much water makes the salt semi-dissovle and as it's drying the crystals reform IN the fibres of the card - so you get a really unusual sparkly, spotty, rough textured card as a result.
6. Leave overnight (or longer depending on the humidity in the air) and carefully peel off the card and brush off large salt crystals (the baking paper makes this step easier - but your card won't be as flat as it would without it). You may need to flatten the results under a book for a few days if you sed the baking paper.
7. Trim to size using scissors (you'll find this card tough going in a trimmer, as by now your card will feel leathery, stiff and rough) and mount as card front.
8. You can carefully wipe off any colour on the surface of the embossing with a damp sponge or tissue, but some colour will have seeped under the embossing - this will not come off and just adds to the interest of the technique!

Have fun - this is unpredictable and loads of fun to play with - esp when the mojo is on the fritz :O)

Another Salted Card!

OK - this is another salted card, also using Twinkling H20s - I totally love the pretty feminine colours of this one and the velvet letter 'e' - I'm a fairly tactile person and just love the fuzzy letters :O)
