Using Watercolor Pencils over Copic Markers

Today I'm having a play and combining my Copic Markers with some of my new Bruynzeel Design Aquarel (Watercolor) Pencils to see what happens! I'm hoping I can create a finished piece that is subtly coloured and allows me to use the translucency of watercolours to enhance my Copic coloured image. Now this project could end up as a card front, journal page or even a framed piece - the choice is yours. What I used: Copic Markers: Blender, YG0000,... Read more →

Smile Mixed Media Background Tutorial

The moment that I saw these gorgeous tissue papers from Hazel and Ruby I knew I wanted to use them on a page, so I sat down to play with a few of the newer items in my stash and this is the result - I think it would also make for an excellent 12 x 12 layout. It's only recently that I've 'found' my scrapbooking or photo page 'style' and I owe that all to Louise Nelson! I've mentioned... Read more →

Oh P-Lease! Journal Page

OK so this was one of those faces I drew while watching TV (I do this quite a bit as I'm easily bored and much better entertained while multi-tasking!). This face had several morphs on it's journey, I kept messing with the mouth, hair and nose - but I finally settled on using this for my class with Jane Davenport - Express Yourself and felt brave enough to give my girl a sneer - well that's what I was aiming... Doodled Journal Page using Negative Space and Neon

OK so this one was a bit of a challenge (I'm waiting for the smaller Hazel and Ruby alphabet stencil masks to arrive!) but in the mean time I thought I'd have a play with what I've got! Today I decided to try combining a range of products to produce a colourful doodled journal page in my journal. If you wanted to try this on a less time consuming scale it would also make a fabulous card front or scrap... Read more →

The Earth Laughs in Flowers Journal Page

OK I don't know if I'll be doing this particular technique a whole lot because I don't like working on plasticky surfaces (will explain this below), but it was heaps of fun to try! I'm taking Mastering Twinks with the fabulous Dion Dior and one the exercises was to create a flower garden on a black paper or a black gessoed page (I used black gesso). Now I've been itching to try this for a while, so instead of sticking... Read more →

Copic Backgrounds using Masks and Stencils

Today I will be showing you how to create your own masks and stencils to use with Copic markers and the Copic airbrush. I will be using plain acetate sheets, a wonderful low-tac product called Mask It (from X-Press It) and to finish I will be using lace or grandma's old doilies laying forgotten in the linen press (don't tell my Mum)! What I used: Clear Acetate sheets X-Press It Blending Journal or X-Press It Blending Card Copic Sketch markers... Read more →

Make a Wish - Layered Journal Page

This is a project where you will need to stick with me - as it goes through several UGLY phases before the final page is complete. This is a really versatile technique, you could try this on scrap pages, cards, journal pages or even canvas. Before I begin, I have to give a BIG thank you to Mixed Media Art who featured this article on their web site, and a shout out to the beautiful Tracy Verdugo, Tracy's class opened... Read more →

Copic Marker Mermaid

Hello hello. A few of you may know I just took the AMAZING Mermaid Circus class online with Jane Davenport and Teesha Moore - swoon! I've had a ball, though in the usual Sparkle Tart fashion I don't think I'll ever finish all of the lessons! One of the challenges was to draw a face and shade using Copic markers, I won't be telling you Jane's secrets for doing this but I will be showing you my results. Now if... Read more →

Watercolor Journal Page with Simple 'Art Girl' Dress

OK so I'm taking (ahem) another online class - yes I'm a little bit addicted! This class is with the fabulously talented Joanne Sharpe and is called Doodle Arts and Letters - it's a heap of fun and if you'd like to doodle more it's well worth the $. I've just finished this cute little journal page and thoroughly enjoyed the whole process, as it brought back so many happy memories from my childhood: racing my brother home from school,... Progress of a Mixed Media Journal Page

I started actively learning to draw 18 months ago now if you follow my blog you will have seen some of my efforts, I'm slow but steady in my progress. I try new techniques, I practice, I take classes, I think about what I have learned and how to use this new knowledge, I try new ideas and slowly I am becoming better at drawing. Last year I drew this fairy, she was the first thing I had ever drawn... Read more →

Playing with faces

I wish I had taken a before and after photo of this face, it was a heartbeat away from being covered in gesso when I picked up a watercolour pencil (sepia) and started to 'play' with the original - I erased the short bob hair, made the eyes larger and the rest is basically the same. I have to thank my Mum for this one, she liked the original face and it's the only reason I didn't start over -... Read more →

Copic 'K' Journal Page

Today I thought I'd share a page from my Copic Art Journal. YES this did take a while to finish, but as you may know, I was recently 'out-of-action' for a total of 3 months and not able to do much except lay in in reclining chair (it was a looooong 3 months) - so I had time to spare and not much else to do :O) This page kept me happily busy for a while between the doodling and... Foxy Lady Unfinished Journal Page

I'm not sure where this journal page is going or how I will finish it, but I'm working on it and enjoying the process and act of drawing. It's silly aka whimsical, I'm playing with incorporating extras into my people and I'm having a total ball doing it - it's odd to sit there smiling while drawing fox ears onto an image :O) So far all I've done is draw in watercolour pencil (a great trick for those not entirely... Flat Fabio Journal Page

I had to use these amazingly bright colours to off set my fabulous new Jane Girl stamp created by Jane Davenport - I knew right away she needed to be stamped in black on something boldly coloured (I have a few more ideas for her as well, but this one HAD to be created first). Now this may look simple at first glance, but there are layers upon layers and the closer you look the more you see, so here... Read more →

Bloom Journal page

Magicals - Journal Page I was completely chuffed when Tracey (the owner of Lindy's Stamp Gang) asked each of the Design Team members to create some projects for display at CHA 2012 Winter. I've been playing with Zentangling lately so thought I'd combine my Magicals (fabulous powder paints) with some tangle inspired designs and came up with this - it's totally different from anything else LSG had on display, but I don't think that's a bad thing. What I used:... Read more →

Butterfly Girl Journal Page

OK some days I get so excited by something I leap right in and every now and then don't quite get it right - that was the case with this page. I was supposed to do 2 pages for homework, one paint over copied image and one gesso image transfer - I watched both clips on LifeBook and enthusiasticly began my page - half way into the colouring I was scratching my head - something wasn't right - uh oh... Watercolor, Pencil and Metallic Paint Journal Page

Wow week 3 of Lifebook did my head in, I watched the clip had a small freak out and then watched it again. Our mission was to create art representing our dual nature, dark/light, heaven/earth - NOT good and evil, but look at the qualities within us that are a contradiction. Thankfully I listened to what Bonnie Rose was saying and gave myself permission to create the image of 'duality' that was bouncing around in my head trying to get... Read more →
